6 EWG Reviewed Non-Toxic Bath & Body Products That ACTUALLY Work

We are obsessed with non-toxic bath and body products—but let’s face it, the market is saturated with products that simply don’t work. Over the years, we’ve tried dozens of moisturizers, face washes, serums, and more that made big claims and offered few results. But after countless letdowns, some products have lived up to the hype.

However, in the era of greenwashing, it’s hard to know if our beloved potions are secretly brimming with toxins. The beauty industry has very few federal regulations that stop companies from using dangerous ingredients or from marketing their products as clean and organic when they’re not.

Standard beauty products often contain mercury, formaldehyde, asbestos, lead, and other toxic ingredients. While it is true that our skin blocks most absorption, it doesn’t stop everything from reaching our bloodstream. And the ingredients have other ways into our bodies. We put makeup on our eyes and mouth, and everything else, we can inhale.

“The use of synthetic products has been associated with a variety of chronic diseases, including cancer, respiratory conditions, neurological disorders, and endocrine disruption,” writes The National Library of Medicine.

The EWG Vets Bath and Body Products So You Can Feel Safe About What You Use

But we’re not here to scare you with doom and gloom. For decades, scientists and consumers have been shedding light on these problems, and companies have been working hard to develop non-toxic bath and body products that are both safe and effective. And in 1993, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) formed with the mission “to empower you with breakthrough research to make informed choices and live a healthy life in a healthy environment.”

The EWG is a well-respected team of scientists, attorneys, analysts, data and communications specialists who work hard to push for more legislation and transparency in the beauty industry. Its team also analyzes products and gives them a score from 1 to 9 and lists them in its Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. The lower the score, the safer the product. The EWG gives the safest, most transparent products the coveted “verified” label (more on that below). When we see a beauty product we want to try, we head to the site to see how safe it is. These are seven of our favorite hair, makeup, and body products that earned great scores from the EWG.

These Are Some of Our Absolutely Favorite EWG Vetted Bath & Body Products

1.) Rejuva Minerals Natural Look Pressed Foundation

Rejuva Minerals’ Natural Look Pressed Foundation is on EWG’s growing list of “verified” products, which means it “meets EWG’s strictest standards for health and safety. It avoids any of the ingredients on EWG’s ‘Unacceptable List’ and provides full transparency of ingredients, including fragrance.”

This luxurious foundation feels silky smooth on your face and blends away discolorations and blemishes to give you flawless-looking skin—without looking too made up. It’s buildable, so you can tailor the amount of coverage. And according to Rejuva Mineral’s site, celebrities like Shailene Woodley and Tori Spelling trust this product.

2.) Herbivore Botanicals Pink Cloud Creamy Jelly Cleanser

Honestly, there isn’t a product by Herbivore Botanicals that we don’t love. But we chose to highlight its Pink Cloud Creamy Jelly Cleanser because it’s a staple in our shower, because it’s not only effective, it’s also affordable at only $28.

This particular writer has yet to find a face wash that she loves more than this. The moisturizing formula doesn’t strip her dry, sensitive skin’s natural oils, and it never leaves her skin feeling tight and uncomfortable.

Pro Tip: Follow with one of Herbivore’s famous facial oils to maximize your beautiful glow.

3.) The Honest Company Tinted Lip Balm

We all need a go-to tinted lip balm, and Honest Company has one of the best and cleanest around. The balm is made with soothing, antioxidant-rich ingredients, and it comes in six different shades that can make you look dressed up or give you a nice, healthy pinch of color.

4.) RMS Beauty Straight Up Volumizing Peptide Mascara

Finding a clean mascara that actually works was one of the hardest parts of switching to non-toxic bath and body products. We’ll admit it—those drugstore varieties definitely make our lashes look full and voluminous, and many of the natural brands fall flat. But RMS’s Straight Up Volumizing Peptide Mascara gives our lashes a nice lift.

Many clean mascaras smudge or smear under your eyes way too easily, and this product finally saved us from looking like raccoons. It’s also a flake-free mascara, so it doesn’t crumble into your eyes. The brush beautifully separates your lashes and gives them a nice little curl. This is a great mascara to give your eyes the perfect touch.

5.) ILIA Soft Focus Finishing Powder

If you have dry or aging skin, ILIA’s Soft Focus Finishing Powder is your new favorite makeup product.

Have you noticed that so many powders sit on top of your skin or accentuate your fine lines? This powder does NOT do that. In fact, it does the opposite. It’s somehow moisturizing and soaks into your skin without showing any powdery residue while also giving you a soft matte finish. It blurs away lines and takes years off your skin.

6.) ROZ Willow Glen Pre-Wash Treatment Oil

If you’re a Millennial or Gen Xer, you might remember those hot oil treatments that were sold at every grocery and drug store. ROZ Willow Glen Pre-Wash Treatment Oil is like that—but way better.

This golden-hued oil is jam-packed with nourishing oils like kukui Nut and macadamia nut that soften and repair your hair. And it feels like a spa treatment. Users have reviewed it all over the internet, and it gets glowing accolades. Credo Beauty and Sephora both show an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5.
